n. A bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past.

Swiss medical student Johannes Hofer (1669-1752) was the first to coin the term ‘nostalgia’. In his 1688 thesis, he combined the Greek terms nostos (for ‘returning home’) and algia (for ‘pain’). Nostalgia was, in his definition, ‘the pain a sick person feels because he is not in his native land, or fears never to see it again.’ Nostalgia was considered to be a disease, a diagnosis, which removed a person from their present reality. Sufferers took on a lifeless and haggard countenance, became indifferent to their surroundings, confused past and present, longing desperately for a past they had left behind.
